A small double-acting, single-stroke pump at the telemotor kept the hydraulic system full of fluid. This pump "clicked" when the steering wheel was at dead center (zero rudder angle). The steam valves of these engines were connected to the Main wheel in the Wheelhouse via hydraulics (Browns Patent Telemotor). The stern docking bridge was directly connected to the engine and featured hatches that allowed engineers to drop down and check the engine. In essence, the telemotor was like the remote control for the Titanic’s steering gear and here is how it worked. There were two wheels mounted forward on the Bridge. The main wheel was enclosed in the Wheelhouse and was connected to the master control of the Brown’s Patent Telemotor.

The ships main helm was seated only a few feet aft of this spot and connected to this telemotor directly. The telemotor translated steering commands from the helm to the steering gear in the stern. The bronze telemotor, the only surviving piece of equipment from the bridge. The bridge was destroyed when the first funnel toppled over on it. The prominent feature that remains is the bronze telemotor for the ship's wheel and the base mountings for the walls of the wheelhouse. The bridge wing cabs on both sides broke up and collapsed. Inside the wheelhouse was located the main ship’s wheel, and immediately forward of it another binnacle housing a second steering compass.

The wheel at this location was connected to a steering mechanism called a Telemotor. Since it would have been impossible to move the rudder of a huge ship like Titanic without some sort of mechanical assistance, a large and powerful steering engine at the stern turned the rudder; this steering engine was controlled by the Telemotor. The telemotor receives any signal from the bridge (By turning the steering wheel),and magnifies it,to operate the control lever on the main hydraulic pump which will deliver to the main actuating rams connected to the rudder. The telemotor on the Titanic's bridge is where Titanic's officers tried to avoid the iceberg.
